What is it about?

On 1 July 2020, Germany took over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, one of the most important institutions of the EU, for six months. A central goal: to provide impetus for a sustainable Europe.

The project “Young Consumers for Sustainable Development – European Youth Agenda for Sustainable Consumer Policy” would like to make a contribution to this. Your ideas, opinions, and interests on questions of future consumer policy are decisive for this.

In an open ONLINE CONSULTATION, young people in Europe are given the opportunity to jointly identify the most important aspects that are oriented towards sustainability goals – sustainable consumption, sustainable production patterns and climate protection measures. The questions derived from this will form the basis for the Future Lab, which will take place from 16 to 18 October.

The aim of the meeting, at which 40 committed young people from different European countries will discuss with each other, is to draw up a European Youth Agenda for sustainable consumer policy. The key messages will be presented in a video, which will be shown at the “Consumer Days” of the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection (BMJV) in December.

What is behind it?

In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Agenda 2030, a comprehensive roadmap for the future, which shows us what a more socially, economically, and ecologically sustainable world could look like by 2030 and beyond.

The Agenda includes 17 global sustainability goals – Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs – which are aimed at governments, civil society, the private sector, and academia. They aim to reduce poverty and hunger, improve health, create equality, provide education for all, and protect the planet.

A sustainable consumer policy can make an important contribution to this. For example, it can create appropriate framework conditions for the market and inform and motivate consumers to adopt sustainable consumption patterns. In this way, it promotes greater demand for sustainable products and services. A consumer policy of this kind affects you and all other young people in particular. After all, young consumers in particular can play a decisive role in shaping the future through their behaviour.
